‘Business buoyant amid hostilities’

(Mindanao Daily Mirror, 17 September 2008) Business is still buoyant in Region 11 despite the ongoing hostilities in Central Mindanao, Gerardo Reynaldo, an official of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MED-Co) said.

Reynaldo at a press conference said there is no substantial slowing down in the coming in of investors in the region.

“In general, there are still a number of investors in Mindanao,” Reynaldo said.

In the same press conference, Davao Chamber of Commerce and Industry Incorporated (DCCII) president Simeon Marfori joined Reynaldo saying that economic activities are not affected in Davao City by the ongoing skirmishes in some parts of Mindanao.

“We are very fortunate here because Davao is relatively peaceful,” Marfori said.

Marfori said “Support Mindanao’s Pursuit of Peace” which was recently launched in partnership with the government, will cushion the impact of war particularly on investments.

He said the project aims to unite and mobilize the private sector and government to raise the necessary relief goods for the conflict-affected areas.

“DCCII believes that peace initiative requires multisectoral participation. We are calling all Davaoeños to bring together their donations to DCCII,” Marfori said. Maya M. Padillo
