Council supports "Buy Local"
(by Grace L. Plata, 10 June 2009, SunStar Davao) A RESOLUTION supporting the campaign "Buy Filipino, Buy Local" was approved unanimously Tuesday by the Davao City Council as proposed by Councilor Peter Laviña.
Laviña said the campaign is aimed to promote Filipino manufacturing, create and save Filipino jobs, stop smuggling and encourage Filipinos to patronize our own products and services.
"The global recession has caused the loss of Filipino manufacturing, rising unemployment, dumping of excess foreign goods to the country and smuggling among others," Laviña said during his speech.
In an interview, Laviña said authorities have pegged smuggling damages from 2002-2007 at P4.3 trillion.
The Federation of Philippine Industries and the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce initiated the campaign, which will be launched Wednesday at the Club Filipino in San Juan City.
"Our own Davao Branding System Ordinance promotes the raising of quality, standards and marketability of locally-produced products. We have to push to make the implementation more effective," Laviña said.
