Harnessing Davao River's Potential: Private and Government Sectors push for a River Highway

The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII), with the support of the members composing the Davao City SME Development (SMED) Council, requested that a study be conducted to convert Davao River into a Water Highway. This is after seeing Davao River's potential of becoming an alternative way to transport goods from agricultural farms to the markets.

As an initial step to advance this advocacy, DCCCII submitted a resolution for the City Government to look into the viability of this project. In various press conferences, DCCCII President Simeon P. Marfori II said that the conversion of the Davao River into a highway would contribute in the decrease of relatively intolerable traffic in some of our roads such as in Bankerohan and Toril where most of the products coming from the farms are usually brought to be sold. With the rising cost of fuel, the river could be a very practicable and cheap alternative route.

There is also an equally big potential for this project to boost the tourism industry of the city. This initiative may give rise to tourism-related amenities such as floating restaurants. Davao City could be at par or even better than the Chinese Floating Restaurant in Manila Bay or the much-visited floating restaurants in Loboc River in Loboc Town of Bohol or the Floating Markets in Thailand.

It is, however, realized that this project would cost millions of pesos and achieving this goal would entail extensive and well-thought of courses of action. It is in this light that the DCCCII, while it reveals the vision mentioned, is requesting the government to conduct a study on the feasibility of this concept.

Councilor Leonardo Avila III initially expressed support and interest on this proposal from the private sector. He said this would be best presented during the Davao River Forum.

In various commentaries, writers/columnists reveal that plans for Davao River, such as making it into a River Highway, have been going on since the 1980s. Also, since 1999, there have been conservation projects and initiatives pushed to conserve and rehabilitate the river.

Up until now, though, there have been relatively few apparent realizations to those plans. It is, therefore, hoped that this time, the private sector, through DCCCII, and the government would team up to pursue the attainment of these plans, which apparently dominoes to the improvement of the tourism and trade industries of Davao City.
